Being a responsible pet owner
When we own pets we have a big responsibility to look after them. In the same way that your parents look after and care for you, it is your responsibility to do the same for your pet.
Rules and regulations
Apart from the obvious responsibilities of providing food, water, shelter, and shelter for your pet, there are also many rules and regulations for pet owners. Just like there are rules at school to keep you safe and happy, there are special rules that we need to follow in our community when we own a pet.
Different areas have different rules and laws, so it is a good idea to check with your local council for any laws concerning your pet. Some pets are not allowed to be kept in certain areas and others (such as snakes) require special permits.
Small pets
Small pets such as birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats need to be kept in suitable enclosures. This is very important for their safety.
These enclosures must have adequate light and protection from weather and other animals. There must also be enough room for your pet to exercise.
Dogs
Owning a dog is a big responsibility. There are many things you need to take into account to ensure the best for your dog’s welfare.
- Make sure your fences are high enough to keep your dog on your property
- Keep all gates closed and ensure they can’t burrow under fences
- Make sure you train your dog to be obedient
- Don’t let your dog roam the streets
- Teach your dog to poo at home
- Make sure your dog is on a lead when out walking
- Always pick up after your dog when you are walking
- Register your dog, This is a big help if he gets lost
- If your dog looks unwell take him to a vet
Cats
In some places, cats need to be registered. Check with your local council or vet.
- Keep your cat inside at night for its own safety and for the safety of native birds and animals.
- Make sure you toilet train your cat
- Teach your cat to mix with other humans
- If your cat looks unwell, take him to a vet
All pets need love and care
No matter what kind of pet you own, whether it be a ferret, a rabbit, a guinea pig, mice, a bird, snakes, fish or a lizard, all pets come with a big responsibility.
You are responsible for their well-being and it is up to you to care for and look after your pet the same as you would a member of your family.
Love and respect your pet and it will love and trust you.
